Gwlan Y Fenni
Abergavenny Wool
Our smallholding is in the small village of Llanddewi Rhydderch. It is home to our flock of Coloured Ryeland Sheep, which have been lovingly reared for 6 years and seems to be forever growing!! We have also established a Textile Studio - Textiles at The Weir where we run courses, as well as create our own products.
Anyway, in one year we have bred 19 lambs, and their wool will be going into making yet more throws, cushions and scarves and covered books - so be ready to see our products for many years to come.
We have the wool processed, spun, and woven by an independent woollen mill in beautiful Mid Wales. We chose them as it is family run, just like us!!
Our fleece comes in various colours ranging from striking silver through to many gorgeous shades of grey and fawn. All mixed together to produce these beautiful shades, light, medium and dark colourways which I'm sure you will agree will suit any colour scheme!
All woollen products are hand washable.
The Sheep
Ryeland Sheep are amongst the oldest of the established British Sheep breeds, it is thought that they were derived from the Spanish Merino. Although it is also known the breed was developed in the area surrounding Ross-On-Wye, which is only down the road from where we are now! They were highly prized for their fleece.
